Prevention of Gender-based Violence (GBV)
In Uganda, where nearly half of women experience physical violence in their lifetime, ADRIVUYO Uganda addresses Gender-based Violence as a critical human rights and public health concern. Young women aged 15-24 are particularly vulnerable, with cultural norms, economic dependency, and limited awareness of rights creating systemic barriers to safety and justice, especially in rural communities where protection services are scarce and survivors often face stigma when seeking help.

ADRIVUYO Uganda implements a multi-level GBV prevention strategy that includes community awareness workshops engaging both men and women, safe spaces for survivors to access counseling and legal advice, and economic empowerment initiatives that reduce women's financial dependency—a key factor that often traps them in abusive relationships. Our "Male Champions" program specifically works with men and boys as allies in GBV prevention, challenging toxic masculinity and promoting positive models of male engagement.

Our three-year intervention in Namugongo village demonstrates the power of comprehensive GBV prevention, with a 40% increase in GBV reporting, community-led support systems for survivors, and local leaders establishing by-laws against domestic violence. Former perpetrators now serve as advocates for change, showing that with proper engagement, communities can transform harmful practices and create environments where women and girls live free from the threat of violence, able to exercise their rights and reach their full potential.
